The committee and the nominee
The Judiciary Committee evaluating Judge Sonia Sotomayor's qualifications for the Supreme Court is the most Democratic in 40 years - a reflection of the party breakdown in the Senate, where Democrats control 60 of 100 votes.
Of the panel's 19 members, 12 are Democrats; seven are Republicans. Two are women. Thirteen hold law degrees; two have MBAs; one is a farmer; one is a physician. Ten were in the Senate in 1998, when Sotomayor won confirmation to the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Seven voted for her, three against. Roll over each silhouette to see what the senator asked Sotomayor and how she responded.
